About this Tool
This calculator estimates a cat's daily caloric needs using the same two-step veterinary formula as dogs. It provides a solid starting point, but individual needs can vary. Always monitor your cat's body condition and adjust feeding as necessary.
Step 1: Resting Energy Requirement (RER)
The RER is the energy required for a cat to perform essential bodily functions at rest (breathing, digestion, etc.). The formula is based on metabolic body weight:
$$ RER = 70 \times (\text{body weight in kg})^{0.75} $$
This formula is considered the most accurate for a wide range of animal sizes.
Step 2: Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER)
The MER is your cat's total daily energy need. It's calculated by multiplying the RER by a factor based on their life stage and activity level.
The multipliers used in this calculator are:
- Neutered / Spayed Adult: 1.2 x RER
- Intact Adult: 1.4 x RER
- Inactive / Prone to Obesity: 1.0 x RER
- Weight Loss Plan: 0.8 x RER
- Weight Gain Plan: 1.8 x RER
- Active / Outdoor Cat: 1.6 x RER
- Kitten (Under 1 year): 2.5 x RER
Important Considerations
- Starting Point Only: These calculations are estimates. Adjust food intake to achieve or maintain an ideal body condition.
- Ideal Weight: For weight loss or gain plans, you should use your cat's *ideal* or *target* weight, not their current weight.
- Treats: Treats should not make up more than 10% of your cat's total daily calorie intake.
- Consult a Vet: Always consult with a veterinarian for a nutrition plan, especially for kittens, or cats with medical conditions.
