About Golf Handicaps
A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's potential ability, allowing players of different skill levels to compete on more equal terms. The lower the handicap, the better the player. The current global standard is the World Handicap System (WHS).
Key Terms
- Course Rating: Indicates the average "good score" a scratch golfer (a player with a 0 handicap) is expected to shoot on a course. It's a measure of the course's difficulty for expert players.
- Slope Rating: Measures the relative difficulty of a course for a bogey golfer (a player with an 18 handicap) compared to a scratch golfer. A higher slope rating (max 155) means the course is significantly harder for the average player. 113 is the standard slope.
- Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC): An adjustment (-1 to +3) that accounts for abnormal course or weather conditions on a given day, making scores more accurate.
